(1901 - 1970)
Sukarno was the first President of Indonesia,
serving from 1945 to 1967. He is known as the
"Father of the Nation", and most of the Indonesians
remember him as "Bung Karno".
He was the leader of the Indonesian struggle for
independence from the Netherlands. Upon Japanese
surrender, Sukarno and Mohd. Hatta declared
Indonesian independence on 17 August 1945.
He was replaced in 1967, by one of his
serving from 1945 to 1967. He is known as the
"Father of the Nation", and most of the Indonesians
remember him as "Bung Karno".
