politician who served as the 35th President of Brazil
from 2003 to 2010.
Lula ran unsuccessfully for president three times
before achieving victory in the 2002 election. He
was then re-elected in 2006.
In July 2017, he was convicted and sentenced to nine
years in prison for corruption. On 8 November 2019,
Lula was released from prison after serving 580 days.
