Arafat, was a Palestinian political leader and 
1st President of the Palestinian National Authority 
from 1994 to 2004.  He was Chairman of the 
Palestinian Liberation Organization (PLO) and
 founding member of the Fatah political party, 
which he led from 1959 until 2004.

Israel attempted to assassinate Arafat on a 
number of occasions.  Numerous theories have 
appeared regarding Arafat's death, with most 
prominent being poisoning.

The majority of Palestinian people view him as a 
heroic freedom fighter and martyr who symbolized 
the national aspirations of his people.
