Mihai Viteazul was the Prince of Wallachia
(1593 - 1601) and de facto ruler of Transylvania
(1599 - 1600). He is considered one of Romania's
greatest national heroes and was seen by
19th -century nationalists as the first author
of Romanian unity.
On 9 August 1601, Michael was assassinated by the
order of the Habsburg Emperor, it took place near
