Melchior Ndadaye
(1953 - 1993)
Melchior Ndadaye was a Burundian intellectual
and politician. He was the first democratically elected
and politician. He was the first democratically elected
and became 4th President of Burundi. Ndadaye's
government was to be short-lived, he was overthrown
and assassinated in a military coup on
21 October 1993, after three months in office.
His assassination sparked the decade-long Burundi
Civil War.Many thousands of civilians, on both sides,
were killed with estimated to be above 100,000.
