Born in Buenos Aires, Argentina, he is the head of the
Catholic Church and sovereign of the Vatican City State. 

His papacy began in 13 March 2013, and the first Pope

 from outside Europe.  He choose Francis (Francesco)
 as his papal name in honour of Saint Francis of Asisi.
